The transverse colon follows the ascending colon and hepatic flexure. It lies across the upper part of the abdomen. It ends with a bend in the colon called the splenic flexure. The colon itself is made up of the caecum, the ascending colon, the hepatic flexure, the transverse colon, the splenic flexure, the descending colon and the sigmoid colon (Figure 1). It is about 1.5 m long, the transverse colon being the longest and most mobile part (Meschan, 1975), and has a average diameter of about 6.5 cm. The colon is the part of the large intestine that extends from the cecum to the rectum.
